Changes in the Office of the Executive Director

AAUP executive director Julie Schmid stepped down in June to become senior director of higher education at the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The AAUP has been fortunate to benefit from Schmid’s service as executive director since 2013 and, from 2002 to 2008, as a senior program officer in the Department of Organizing and Services.

In the wake of this departure, the AAUP’s governing Council appointed Nancy Long as interim executive director. Long first joined the AAUP’s staff as associate counsel in 2011 and has served as deputy executive director since November 2022. She has wide-ranging experience with organizational restructuring, compliance, and faculty handbook administration.

A search for a permanent executive director is now underway.
