Following the Atlanta-area murders in March of eight people, including six women of Asian descent, the AAUP issued a statement expressing sorrow and solidarity with Asian and Asian American communities. Anti-Asian racism has been a recurring theme in United States history. Since early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Americans across the country have been targeted by people who are motivated by white supremacist beliefs and encouraged by right-wing politicians and media figures to blame people of Asian descent for the virus.
The AAUP condemns such attacks and the racist rhetoric that fuels them; we also affirm our commitment to becoming a deeply antiracist organization and working with allies toward a more just society.
