The US Department of Education recently announced the commencement of a negotiated rulemaking process that would examine institutional quality and accountability issues including accreditation, state authorization, and third-party servicers. AAUP president Irene Mulvey testified at the virtual public hearings and submitted written comments. Given the increase in state political interference in higher education matters, the AAUP urged the department to foreground issues of academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance in its considerations during this negotiated rulemaking process. The AAUP also recommended that faculty play a greater role in the negotiation process itself.
