National Day of Action for Higher Education

By Kelly Benjamin

On Wednesday, April 17, faculty and student groups at more than one hundred US college and university campuses held a National Day of Action in a coordinated counteroffensive against the sustained right-wing assault on American higher education. The grassroots effort, spearheaded by several AAUP chapters, advocated for cross-rank organizing, robust faculty governance, labor solidarity, and the protection of academic freedom as essential to the survival of higher education.

Across the country, faculty and students held teach-ins and other events to fight back against the onslaught of attacks by politicians, trustees, and university donors that are undermining higher education as a public good. The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition at Indiana University launched a three-day strike on the National Day of Action, and large rallies were held at Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania. A video of the “National Teach-In on the Future We Stand For,” which was moderated by AAUP president Irene Mulvey, can be found at https://www.dayofactionforhighered.org/.
