The AAUP Foundation received a $150,000 grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation that will cover costs associated with fall meetings and reports for the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Committee A meets twice each year to discuss academic freedom and tenure investigative reports as well as policy reports pertaining to academic freedom and related matters. Committee members consider the reports of investigating committees regarding administrations that have violated AAUP-recommended principles related to academic freedom and tenure, and the body makes a final determination about whether to recommend censure by vote of the annual meeting.
This generous grant from the Hewlett Foundation provides necessary support for Committee A’s work on issues facing the academy. “That this prominent charitable foundation has recognized the critical importance of the AAUP’s support for academic freedom in these challenging times is a significant and welcome development,” Committee A and Foundation board chair Henry Reichman said. “The grant also marks a major step forward for the AAUP Foundation.” The AAUP Foundation is grateful to Robert Post and Joan Wallach Scott, who serve on the Foundation’s board as well as Committee A, and to staff members in the AAUP’s Department of Academic Freedom, Tenure, and Governance for their work in securing this grant.
