About the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor

The Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor is a loose network of activists involved in contingent faculty issues. Its primary functions are to share information, educate our colleagues and the public, and build solidarity among the scattered ranks of faculty activists. 

Coalition on the Academic Workforce

The Coalition on the Academic Workforce (CAW) was established in 1997 by a group of learned societies in the humanities and social sciences. About twenty-five organizations currently participate in the coalition, including the AAUP.

Contingent Appointments and the Academic Profession

Report examing the costs to academic freedom incurred by the current trend toward overreliance on part and full-time non-tenure-track faculty.  The report recommends that for the good of institutions, of the educational experiences of students, and of the quality of education, the proportion of tenured and tenure-track faculty should be increased.

 

AAUP Contingent Faculty Index 2006

In the AAUP Contingent Faculty Index 2006, the American Association of University Professors provides data to document the increasing predominance of non-tenure-track faculty in America’s colleges and universities. This report draws on figures submitted by institutions to the US Department of Education’s IPEDS database for fall 2005, and makes data on individual campuses easily accessible for the first time.

Recommendations for improving the professional status of the growing number of non-tenure-track faculty; suggests minimum standards designed to protect the professional standing of all faculty.

From the General Secretary: What if...?

Posted on my office pegboard is a bumper sticker that reads, “Why Is That?” expressing the scholarly exploration for understanding that has defined my work for nearly thirty years. Inscribed in my consciousness is another query—what if?— invoking the creative posing of possibilities for practice that has also driven my work and will focus it as the AAUP’s general secretary.

A crisis, we often say nervously, is also an opportunity. But such opportunities are available to multiple, competing constituencies that may not share the same values, priorities, loyalties, goals, and sense of mission.

Such is the nature of the financial crisis now upon us. In higher education we confront the consequences campus by campus. The pressures vary according to each institution’s funding stream.

What We Can’t Say about Contingent Faculty

You can’t draw any conclusions about the conditions of contingent labor until you have the data on wages.
