11.17.2015 | Governance Violations at Union County College

A report out from the AAUP finds severe departures from generally accepted standards of academic governance and details how the administration at the New Jersey community college sharply diminished the role and influence of the faculty in the college’s governance system.

10.27.2015 | Brief Supports Academic Freedom in Research

The American Association of University Professors filed an amicus brief on October 26 with the Arizona Court of Appeals arguing that academic freedom to conduct research is essential to a vital university system and warrants protecting certain research records from disclosure. The case involves a lawsuit filed by the Energy & Environment Legal Institute, a “free market” legal foundation which is using public records requests in a campaign against climate science. 

09.28.2015 | Part-time Faculty Request to Join Existing Union

Part-time faculty at the Los Angeles campus of Emerson College wrote to college president Lee Pelton requesting recognition for all part-time faculty at Emerson LA to become a part of an existing union of part-time faculty at Emerson College. Part-time faculty at the college’s main campus in Boston are represented in collective bargaining by the Affiliated Faculty of Emerson College, which is affiliated with the American Association of University Professors (AFEC-AAUP).

This report questions hasty actions by the administration, procedures followed, and low tolerance for profanity at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. This supplementary report on a censured administration is one of only seven such reports issued in the AAUP’s century of existence.

06.05.2015 | AAUP Censures Four, Removes Censure from One

Censure by the AAUP informs the academic community that the administration of an institution has not adhered to generally recognized principles of academic freedom and tenure. With these actions, fifty-six institutions are currently on the censure list.

06.03.2015 | Georgina M. Smith Award

Barbara Hopkins, professor of economics  at Wright State University, has been selected as the 2015 recipient of the AAUP’s Georgina M. Smith Award. The award will be presented at the June 13 Awards Luncheon.

06.02.2015 | Annual Conference on the State of Higher Education & 101st Annual Meeting of the AAUP

This year’s conference has special significance as the AAUP marks the Association’s centennial. Members of the media are welcome to attend.

06.01.2015 | Ralph S. Brown Award for Shared Governance

The Brown Award is given to American college or university administrators or trustees “in recognition of an outstanding contribution to shared governance." This award will be presented at the AAUP's Award luncheon on Saturday, June 13.
