A faculty member was dismissed without the basic procedural protection of academic due process. In fact, there are no written regulations or by-laws which safeguard academic freedom, tenure, and due process at Phillips County Community College. Apart from the lack of written safeguards—indeed, perhaps in part because of this deficiency—sound conditions of academic freedom, tenure, and due process do not exist at this college.
The text of this report was written by the members of the investigating committee. In accordance with Association practice, the text was sent to the Association's Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure, to the teacher at whose request the investigation was conducted, to the administration of Phillips County Community College, and to other persons directly concerned in the report. In the light of the suggestions received, and with the editorial assistance of the Association's Washington Office staff, the report was published in the May 1978 issue of Academe.
