2013 AAUP Updates

Since 1981, the annual Professors of the Year program has honored a select group of U.S. professors who excel as educators and influence the lives and careers of their students. 

The AAUP's general secretary has authorized an investigation into alleged violations of academic freedom, tenure, and due process at Louisiana State University. 

The AAUP's Collective Bargaining Congress today issued this statement in response to the Association of Governing Boards’ newly released "Statement on Institutional Governance."

Many Academe readers will now have online access to back issues of Academe magazine and its predecessor, the AAUP Bulletin, thanks to an agreement between JSTOR and the AAUP. 

 A newly formed AAUP chapter at New Mexico State University, spurred by the prospect of severe cuts in educational programs, has staked out a strong public profile. 

Professors Adam Habib and Tariq Ramadan will address U.S. audiences this spring after years of being wrongfully denied entry to the country on the basis of their political views.

Update: On Wednesday, March 10, after strong protests from faculty, students, and university administrations, Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell issued an "executive directive"  stating that "discrimination against enumerated classes of persons set forth in the Virginia Human Rights Act or discrimination against any class of persons without a rational basis is prohibited."  

After faculty protested, the statewide board of trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning dropped from its February agenda a discussion of language that would have changed tenure policy and due process protections in the state university system.

March 4 was a day of action for faculty and other supporters of higher education. Participants held rallies, demonstrations, teach-ins, and other types of events at campuses and other locations across California, and seventeen other states.

The AAUP chapter at Monmouth University in New Jersey has signed a three year agreement with the university that provides for raises in each year as well as improvements in several areas. The chapter represents full-time faculty in collective bargaining.

Yesterday, members of the University of Akron AAUP chapter ratified a contract with the administration. 

The study demonstrates the continued relevance and power of the AAUP’s concept of shared governance. 

Update 2/16/10: The AAUP and other coalition members sent a letter to secretary of state Hillary Clinton thanking her for ending the exclusion of Habib and Ramadan and asking her to reconsider other, similar cases.

USA Today finds that at many institutions, athletic programs continue to receive large subsidies--even while instructional budgets are being cut. 

The national AAUP congratulates its University of Washington chapter on its thoughtful and well reasoned statement urging UW provost Phyllis Wise to resign from her position on the board of the Nike Corporation.
