Report Finds Violations of Academic Freedom

A new AAUP report, which appears in the 2011 Bulletin of the AAUP that accompanies this issue of Academe, finds violations of academic freedom in two cases at Louisiana’s flagship public institution, Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. The cases were investigated and the report written by a committee of AAUP members with no previous involvement with the individuals in question. The first case, affecting a nontenured associate professor of engineering, involves freedom in pursuing research, publication, and extramural speech in a politically charged atmosphere.

Investigation in Louisiana

The past five years have witnessed the publication of three major reports on Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure investigations of Louisiana cases. The first of these, Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans Universities, was an investigation of apparent violations of principles of academic freedom and tenure at five of the city’s universities. The administrations of four of the universities were placed on censure by the AAUP’s 2007 annual meeting. The first was removed by the annual meeting in 2008, the second in 2009, and the final two in 2011.

AAUP Investigating Governance Issues at UVA

On June 8, the University of Virginia Board of Visitors asked for and obtained the resignation of Teresa Sullivan from the presidency of the university without explanation to her, the other chief administrative officers, or the university’s faculty and student body of the specific grounds for its displeasure with her performance.

Academic Freedom and Tenure: St. Bonaventure University

Report arising from the termination of the appointments of eighteen tenured faculty members, on grounds of financial exigency, at St. Bonaventure University.
